Foundation Prize Patrol Surprises
Three Orange County Public School Teachers

The Foundation for Orange County Public Schools’ Prize Patrol surprised three teachers with an early announcement they have been awarded a 2009-2010 Foundation Teacher Grant.

On October 21st, the Foundation’s Prize Patrol visited Stonewall Jackson Middle School where Dr. Craig Evans, the Foundation’s Executive Director, presented 7th grade science teacher, Allyson Prince, with a check and balloons for her two successful grant applications…a Darden Innovative Grant for $1,000 and a Progress Energy Math & Science Grant for $2,000. Both of these creative projects will enhance classroom learning and promote student achievement.

Later that day, the Prize Patrol visited Dream Lake Elementary where an auditorium packed with anxious 3rd graders eagerly awaited a surprise announcement. Director of Foundation Grant Programs, Twanna Scroggins, then proclaimed that one of their teachers, Ms. Dee Camp-White, not only won a grant, but received a perfect score on her application. Ms. Scroggins delivered the good news along with a $1,000 check for her Darden Innovative Grant project entitled “Trouble on the St. John’s River.” This project will benefit Dream Lake’s entire 3rd grade team (140 students).

The following day, the Prize Patrol burst into Sue Hwang’s physical science class at University High School. Ms. Hwang and her students were shocked as Dr. Evans presented a check for $3,000 for her Progress Energy – Energy Conservation Grant that focuses on using windmills to reduce the school’s energy consumption. Energy Conservation was a new theme for the Progress Energy Grants this year with the goal of helping today’s youth understand the importance of energy conservation and renewable sustainability.

This was great news for us at Dream Lake Elem. We are so proud of Dr Camp-White and what she does to help all of us in the third grade. I want to congratulate her again and all of the teachers at DLE who also received their grants.
