Helping Students Prepare for College

The Foundation for Orange County Public Schools thanks Bank of America for its support of our AVID Tutors program. Recently, the Bank of America Charitable Foundation awarded us a $7,000 Workforce Development & Education Grant to help fund Advancement Via Individual Determination, or AVID. The grant we received is part of ongoing investments by Bank of America to help connect the unemployed, underemployed, veterans, youth and those with disabilities to employment opportunities and success.

AVID is national program that helps prepare students for college. Orange County has the program in 48 middle and high schools.Often these students are the first in their families to attend college. AVID curriculum focuses students and teachers on writing, inquiry, collaboration, organization and reading.

College students serve as tutors to help AVID students two days a week during their AVID elective class. They support the students in organizational management and critical thinking. AVID tutors work with students in a group setting using the Socratic Method to increase their higher order thinking skills, enhancing their ability to become individual thinkers and problem-solvers.
