Helping Students Prepare for College

Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) is national program that helps prepare students for college. Orange County has the program in 48 middle and high schools.Often these students are the first in their families to attend college. AVID curriculum focuses students and teachers on writing, inquiry, collaboration, organization and reading.

College students serve as tutors to help AVID students two days a week during their AVID elective class. They support the students in organizational management and critical thinking. AVID tutors work with students in a group setting using the Socratic Method to increase their higher order thinking skills, enhancing their ability to become individual thinkers and problem-solvers.

Bank of America's Charitable Foundation invested $10,000 to provide tutors at South Creek and Meadow Woods middle schools, and the Consortium of Florida Education Foundation is matching it with $10,000. Funds also will be used to take students to visit college campuses. So for $20,000, 180 students will be coached, supported and inspired.
