Apopka High Alumni - Darter Projects Initiative

Won't You Please Help?

Roughly forty-five years ago, the Apopka High School (AHS) Class of 1976 sponsored the Darter Bird Statue and fountain in the pond that was the centerpiece of Apopka High School.  In 2009 most of AHS was torn down and replaced by the current structures, and the centerpiece pond was relegated to the middle of a parking lot.  Overgrown and long forgotten the Darter Bird Statue began sinking and suffered from a lack of maintenance. Thirty-three years of graduating classes saw our symbol every day as the pride of the Apopka Blue Darters.  Your AHS Alumni Association was asked to take on this project at its inception in 2019.  While building a new alumni organization, the Apopka High School Alumni Association (AHSAA) had a good start, and then 2020 hit.  Faced with quarantines and sheltering at home for Covid-19, protests locally and across the country, and political divisions that go way too deep, the project has been at a standstill until now.

We are asking you to put 2020 behind us and unite for this worthy project.  We can make a difference for the Apopka High School community.  We are asking you to partner with us and unite on this project and projects in the future.  You may ask, “What can I do, and what difference will my contribution make?” First, you can become a member of the AHS Alumni Association even if you didn’t attend AHS yourself.  Your annual membership and support will go a long way toward Darter projects today and in the future.
